Food and Water

Where we were then
Over a third of Haiti suffers from food insecurity. The number of children who are malnourished or who die from starvation is unsettling. We have the opportunity to change that at Center of Hope Orphanage.
Where we are now
- Water – In 2021 a well was installed at the orphanage in Couime. This has allowed the orphanage to find good water on a daily basis at a much lower cost than they had before. The orphanage in Donne still needs to have water trucked in or carried over very rough conditions.
- Food – Thanks to your gifts, we have been able to provide the orphans with 2 meals per day. The meals consist of rice or spaghetti noodles, some seasonings, some basic vegetables, and possible protein depending on what can be purchased.
The cost of food have skyrocketed in Haiti due to the gang issues and political instability. In 2021 we were paying about $10 per bag of rice. The costs of that same bag has increased to $50 if it can even be found.
Where we are going
- Well Project – The orphanage in Couime currently has a well. We would like to install a similar well to the orphanage in Donne. Along with these wells, we would like to add a filtration system to ensure the water is clean for the health and well-being of the children.
- Food – We would like to be able to provide better nutrition in the food we are able to give the children. A little more protein would go a long way in helping them develop.
- Cooking Fuel – A year ago, the only cooking source the orphanage had was a boiling pot heated by charcoal on the ground. We have since been able to add a propane unit so we can purchase charcoal or propane based on whichever fuel source is available or less expensive at that time.
